When you're trying to lose weight, you will always hear people talk about counting calories. The basic rule you're constantly being told is "the less calories is better". Sometimes, this doesn't work though. Here are 6 things to consider when you're trying to keep the weight off by counting calories:

1. Starvation Leads to Slow Metabolism
When you're on a short-term diet and you're restricting your calorie intake to only about 1000 calories a day, you will definitely lose weight fast. But after this short-term diet, you will gain all the weight back just as fast. This is because your body's metabolism slows down and you end up storing all the calories instead of using them. This will lead to more weight gain in the long run.

2. Overcompensation For Skipped Meals
When you skip a meal like breakfast, you tend to get hungrier throughout the day. This will lead you to snack unnecessarily and also to eat a bigger lunch or dinner. The enemy of any weightloss plan is an over-sized portion of food. Eating breakfast consistently will reduce the need to overeat at lunch, thus you'll stay well within your recommended calorie range and still manage to stay on track with your weightloss goals.

3. Snacking Way Too Much
Some people are very good at keeping track of their calories during meal times, but tend to completely overlook what they're snacking on in between. These snacks can be very calorie-heavy if they're sweets or biscuits. Snacking is not a bad thing, just as long as you're taking those snack calories into consideration.

If you're a fan of drinks after work, or even soft drinks at mealtime, you may be packing in more calories than you realise. Many people don't realise just how many calories their drinks contain. Which is why, as a rule of thumb, drink water whenever you can.

6. Setting Yourself Up To Fail
The media bombards us all with imagery of all these slim, sometimes skinny, celebrities. And we want nothing more than to look like that after our weightloss journeys. We want to be slim too. It isn't impossible, most of the time. But it is impossible to do it in 2 weeks. Setting unrealistic goals is the surest way to make sure we don't ever achieve those goals. Small goals matter still matter. Set yourself achievable goals and you'll keep winning.

At the end of the day, a huge part of losing weight is self-acceptance. When you accept your bad habits, you're taking the first step to changing them. The holidays are always a time for feasts and festivities, and somethings, the merry-making can get out of hand. Usually, the holidays are a time to be happy and let go of all your worries. But when you're on a journey to your ideal weight, it can also be a daunting time for you. With social obligations comes a weakening of the will power. We understand this struggle all too well. Which is why, we've got 5 little tips that can help guide you through the holidays.

1. Maintenance
The most important thing to remember when you're dieting through the holidays, is that there's going to be a lot of food that you wouldn't normally eat. Instead of trying to lose any significant amount of weight, your goals should be to maintain the weight you're currently at. Think of this as a pitstop of sorts. You're still in the race. You just have to give your car some well-deserved down time.

2. Eat Your Vegetables!
Even when it's not the holiday season, it's always a good idea to fill your diet with fruits and vegetables. But during the holidays, it's especially important to do so. Fruits help digestion and you can get full on vegetables, without taking in too many calories. We're not saying you should stay away from food at a party, just make good choices and you'll be set.

3. Never Go Hungry
When you have a party to go to almost every night during December, there can be a lot of social pressure which could lead to over-indulgence. Always remember to eat something light before heading out for the night. Snack on some nuts or eat some fruit or a quick salad. The goal of the party is to see your loved ones, but remember that you have to love yourself too. Don't find yourself in a situation where you've de-railed your weight-loss for one night of temptation.

4. No Top Ups
If you're the sort who has a bit more to drink during the holidays, that's okay. Just be mindful of the size of your glasses, and as a rule of thumb, don't top up that drink. The most common way for unwanted weight to creep up on us is through the drinks we have. The key is to always be self aware, because it's easy to get a little carried away during the holidays. We're not trying to be the fun police, we're just saying that extra drink may not be worth the setbacks it could bring.

5. Keep On Moving
This isn't just an encouragement to persevere, we literally mean you should stay active, too, during this time. Even if you can't go about your usual exercise routine when you have to dedicate most of your time to important family moments, you can still find little ways to get your body moving. Run around with the kids when they're playing outside, not only will you be able to fullfill some babysitting duties, you'll be burning calories. As a plan for the new year, you can also ask for a gym membership.

Whatever your holiday situation is, remember that the journey never ends. Enjoy the good times, but also remember to be good to yourself!

We've either been there ourselves, or have had friends or family who've been there: the struggle of that never-ending weight loss journey. Every story is different, but they usually share similar elements of demotivation and temptation. The reason so many weight loss stories don't become successful weight loss stories is because losing weight is hard. And that's the truth. Pure and simple: it's hard.

The journey can be likened to climbing a very big mountain. Trying to get to the peak in a day is an unrealistic expectation to put on oneself, but nevertheless it happens - sometimes we just want to get to the top already. Of course, everyone's story will be uniquely theirs, but here are three tips that may help you get closer to getting the success story you deserve:

1. Start With Small Goals
Remind yourself that losing weight is a process. It won't happen overnight, but with perseverance and ongoing commitment, it will happen eventually. Like the mountain, if you keep at it, you will eventually get to the peak. But instead of setting yourself the goal of "reaching the top", break it down to smaller goals that you can achieve in a shorter duration of time. For instance, if you're coming from never having exercised at all, you can set the goal of working out 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week. Then when you get comfortable, change it up and try to workout 30 minutes with less breaks in between.

2. Record Progress
Having a record of your achievements is a great way to show yourself how far you've come. Being able to measure your small victories will be an indispensable motivator to keep you moving towards your weight loss goals. As humans, we often tend to be too hard on ourselves, so if we can't prove to ourselves that we actually HAVE been

3. Turn it into a Lifestyle
Losing weight is not an impossible feat - it has done many times, by many people. The real challenge is keeping the weight off. The only foolproof way of doing this is by incorporating the journey into our lifestyle.
